Time to...hit the books again!

New semester's starting on Monday. A part of me embraces this fact, another part of me dreads going back. New timetable is still quite alright, although I loathe the fact that it's no longer a 4-day-week, 3 out of 5 days start at 8.30am and 1 day starts at 9.30am. I end an hour earlier, except for Mondays. It's good because I can more or less avoid the mad rush hour, especially at Jurong East MRT station. I have more longer breaks in between. Bad bad bad. Raahhh! I guess it's always this hard towards the end of holidays right? Especially harder this time since I took a trip to Egypt, something that I seldom do. =S

Journey to Egypt (6-15 Dec) ~ Episode 12

13 Dec. The train ride from Luxor back to Cairo would take about 7 hours. By right, we would have arrived in Cairo at about 8am. Instead, we were delayed by 4 hours! The reason being bad train traffic. According to Hussein, there were a couple more trains travelling ahead of ours. And, one of the trains had broken down. Arrrggghhhh....

I woke up at 7am and panicked because I realised the train had stop. I thought we had arrived. Then I paused and hear from neighbouring cabins. Silence. I thought it didn't make sense since breakfast had not been served yet. It would be served about 1-2 hours prior to arrival. Went back to sleep. Woke up at 10am. The train was still moving. We didn't take the breakfast. However, thanks to the delay, we got to spend more time bonding with one another, getting to know one another better. Had nothing to do so I was walking around talking to others, looking out the window. It was rather fun and enjoyable. The only annoying part was that the train stopped and waited several times.

FINALLY! We got down at Giza Train station at about 1.15pm. The delay disrupted our schedule. Supposed to have our lunch and free and easy but we decided to head straight back to Le Meridien to shower. I don't think Cairenes want 42 stinky people walking about. This also meant that we had a super duper tight schedule. Don't forget, Cairo's traffic. Showered and out of hotel by about 3.30pm. Lunch in downtown Cairo city at about 4.30pm. Shopping at Stars Centre, largest and newest shopping mall in Cairo, from 6-9pm. Bought lots of snacks from the local supermarket, Spinneys. Returned to Le Meridien at 9.45pm, dinner at Cavia which was 5-10 mins walk away from Le Meridien. Nice walk back to Le Meridien after dinner despite a bit cold. We had a nice chat with Hussein, Mahmoud and George at the lobby. One of the girls asked Hussein if he would be at the airport to send us off. Unfortunately, he had other commitments and was unable to send us off. To be honest, all of us were quite disappointed to learn that. Returned to room at about midnight. Bitter sweet. The next day at the airport, for those who didn't go for the late dinner the night before and thus weren't aware that Hussein couldn't make it, were asking for him. I think it's kinda sweet. It shows that he has given us a good impression and we had bonded very well with him.

Bye Egypt...for now ;)

Journey to Egypt (6-15 Dec) ~ Episode 11

12 Dec. After dinner by the Nile, we took a short walk to Luxor Temple. It was a nice walk. Took about 10 mins. It's nice to see the streets of Luxor at night. Walking and watching the locals go about their lives. As we were walking, a young girl came up to us and begged for money. Even though I couldn't understand their language, I couldn't tell from her gestures that she was telling us how pity she was, that she needed the money badly to buy food, that she was famished. When you come across such situations in Egypt, you can only either tell say 'no' to them or ignore them. The girl was rather persistent. While we continued with our walk to Luxor Temple,  Hussein said that the girl's mother was just sitting nearby. She got her daughter to come to us the minute we walked by.

Luxor Temple looked extraordinarily beautiful and majestic when it's light up at night. Grand. Magnificent. It was a bit crowded. We spent about an hour at the temple. After that, Hussein brought us to the nearby bazaar (just beside Luxor Temple). There's also MacDonald's. Yea! So glad to see that because we weren't gonna eat the food on the train. Some of us ate there after shopping while others had takeaways from Mac. Quite a nice bazaar. Bought 4 tops (1 traditional top + 3 t-shirts) and 2 magnets. Shopped around for pretty long. Went to Mac for our dinner. I ate the chicken foldover. It's twice the size of the foldover in Singapore! Gigantic cup of drink too. The thing about their combos is that they don't come with drinks. Cost around US$7.

By the time we left Mac (around 8.45pm I think), it was quite chilly. We were the first to return to the bus. Had to return by 9pm. A bit tired from a long day. 7 temples in a day. Got to Luxor Train station close to 10pm. Just nearby. I don't know if we're way too early for our train or the train was delayed again. Just like in Cairo, we were about 1.5 hours early. This time, the train arrived at around 12.45am. It was so so so cold! The area we were waiting was less crowded. What's more, there was a strong wind draft. I was wearing berms. Took a bit of dinner. Just a bit. Yucks. Paid for a glass of hot tea. Off to bed!

Journey to Egypt (6-15 Dec) ~ Episode 10

12 Dec. Rise and shine at 7! Gotta check out of the cruise. It's gonna be a very packed day. Visiting 7 temples in one day. Got out of the cruise by 9. First stop of the day...the famous Karnak temple! Magnificent! The whole compound is so huge and grand! In the ancient days, Karnak and Luxor Temple were connected via a stretch of human-headed sphinxes! They're located 3oom apart facing each other. Karnak comprises a vast conglomeration of ruined temples, chapels, pylons and other buildings, notably the Great Temple of Amen and a massive structure begun by Pharaoh Amenhotep III. It is said to be the largest open-air museum and ancient religious site in the world. It's a beautiful site. Saw the statues of Ramesses II, the obelisks and the many columns in the precint dedicated to Amun-Re.

Next, we headed over to the West Bank to visit the Valley of the Kings. A pity that we weren't allowed to bring cameras in. No worries! Visit http://www.thebanmappingproject.com/ to see for yourself! Looking around, all you can see is hills after hills. Plain yet powerful. Beneath our feet lies the tombs of many powerful Pharaohs. We went into 3 tombs. Can't really remember which 3. Simply breath taking. The colours on the walls are still well-preserved after all these years!

On our way out of the Valley of the Kings, we dropped by the Alabaster factory. Interesting to see how an ornament can be made from this strong mineral. Bought a couple of moonstone statues of the Sphinx and King Tut (i guess so).

Off we go to the temple of Queen Hatshepsut (pronounced "Hot-chic_soup"). She was generally regarded by Egyptologists as one of the most successful female pharaohs. Hatshepsut's reign was long and prosperous. She was successful in warfare early in her reign, but generally is considered to be a pharaoh who started a long peaceful era. She re-established trading relationships lost during a foreign occupation and brought great wealth to Egypt. Too bad towards the reign of his stepson and his successor, an attempt was made to remove any records of Queen Hatshepsut. This meant that her cartouches and images were removed from all walls and this can be seen from the missing patches on the walls.

Next, on to Valley of the Queens. Just like the Valley of the Kings, cameras aren't allowed in there. On our way back to the East Bank, we stopped by the Colossi of Memnon. Two structures stood majestically near the bridge, greeting all who enter and leave West Bank. Back to the East Bank, we had our lunch close to 5pm. Enjoy the sunset while dinning by the Nile. I must say that the food at this restaurant aren't as good as what we have been eating since day one. Anway, didn't eat much. Don't know if it's too tired or because it's way past lunch time.

Journey to Egypt (6-15 Dec) ~ Episode 9

11 Dec. Our morning call was 5.30am. Breakfast at 6am and visiting Kom Ombo (northern Aswan) at 7am. When we stepped out of the cruise at 7, we could see mist when we exhaled air and talk. Cool! The sky was simply too beautiful. Clear blue skies in Aswan and Luxor. And here we are at Kom Ombo. The temple of Kom Ombo was constructed in honour of the crocodile-headed god Sobek. Took quite a few nice shots here. Just love the clear blur sky! I even took some shots on some of the rocks/boulders which we weren't suppose to.

We got back to the cruise slightly before 8.30am because the cruise was scheduled to leave the dock at 8.30am to continue to Edfu. We would reach Edfu at around 1pm. Since we had some time, majority of us went up to the deck to relax, get some sunshine and enjoy the scenery up the Nile. The scenery was simply breath taking. Desert, clear blue sky, blue nile. The wind was pretty strong. Fret not. Face the east to get the sunshine. Too warm? Turn back to the wind. Haha! Did some tanning. Photographing. Relaxing. Enjoying the sunshine, wind and the tranquility of the Nile (the noise cae from us...). Got back to the room at around 10 and played monopoly with James. Gotta take lunch at 12 because we would arrive at Edfu at 1pm.

When we reached Edfu, we took a horse carriage to the Temple of Horus. On this trip, we took an airplane, a coach, a cruise, a taxi, a boat, a felucca, camel, horse carriage and sleeper train. We're just short of submarine and rocket. LOL

Another magnificent looking temple. It is the second largest temple in Egypt after Karnak and one of the best preserved. Dedicated to the falcon god, Horus. Beautiful. Stunning. Powerful. We took the horse carriage back. This time round, I sat with the rider in front and I took the reins! I was reining the horse for 95% of the journey back. It was fun! Not bad, I have what it takes to rein a horse carriage. Hah! The cruise left at 3pm. Went up deck for tea at 4pm. Another chance to take lovely sunset, beautiful sky and scenery. Just love it! No words in this world could describe the relaxed feeling while cruising down the Nile, surrounded by deserts, the occasional patches of vegetation and sights of animals grazing the land. So relaxing! Wish I can cruise up and down everyday! Rest and relax. No worries. Absolutely nothing. Away from our hectic life.

Evening, we had a Galabiya dress party. Had lots of fun! Let my hair down and danced. Modern and a little arabic dance taught by  Got teased by Hussein the next day who said I danced pretty well. I replied jokingly that it wasn't me on the dance floor, it was the glass of white wine. LOL Had a great night. The cruise had already rocked at Luxor.

Journey to Egypt (6-15 Dec) ~ Episode 8

10 Dec. 7 taxis were chartered to take us to Aswan bazaar after the felucca ride. Interesting thing is that the taxis can take 6 passengers! It's shopping time! I bought a towel, a set of granite pyramids, a statue of Anubis, a wood-carved camel for Alex and 3 bottles of sand ornaments for friends. This was also where I gave the "I'm Spectacular" t-shirt to a local boy. His name is Yusif, 11 years old. We took the taxi back at 12.30pm, heading back to the cruise for our lunch.

After lunch, we were scheduled to visit the Nubian village. We took a slow ride down the nile. About 50 mins later, we stopped on the opposite bank and climbed up a relatively steep slope. I'm not sure if it's steep because of the desert sand or it's truly steep. It takes a lot to climb up a short distance. 1 step forward, 3 steps backward. But it felt great to simply walk on genuine desert sand. It's actually quite comfortable. Why were we there?... =) To take a camel ride to the Nubian Village! CAMEL RIDE!!! Yea...got to ride individually
on the camel. My camel's name was Rambo. It was such a fun ride. Sometimes the camel would walk right to the edge of the cliff. Yea. I mean RIGHT to the edge. Over the edge was a short rocky cliff. Cool right? The ride was about 10-15 mins.

At the village, we gathered in a what we thought was the living room of a house. There, Hussein gave us a briefing before we got into the house. I wasn't paying much attention to him at that point in time because Sandra, who sat on my right screamed and clinged onto me. Apparently, the villager carried the baby croc and used it's snout to tap her shoulders. LOL. I wasn't frightened by the croc. I was frightened by her. Seriously. I was excited to carry the baby croc. I love adventures. And I consider this as one. Heehee...I carried it and posed for photos. We got into the house. Explored around. Photographs. After a while, we gathered in a long room to enjoy tea and to take order for the cartouches.

We shopped around the village (as usual, the shops). Walked around to get a sense of the village life. The houses were quite colourful. We interacted with the local kids. So adorable. Then we proceeded to the village school where a teacher gave us a crash course on alphabets and numbers in nubian language. It was fun! 42 people squeezed into a relatively small classroom meant for 60 children. Time to return to the cruise. It was around 5.30pm when we boarded the boat. By then the sun has already set. Beautiful yet eerie to travel on the nile in a small boat. Back on cruise, dinner, wash up. Cruise left for Kom Ombo which was about 2 hours away (if I'm not mistaken). It stopped close to midnight. I had no clue we were already at Kom Ombo until next morning.

Journey to Egypt (6-15 Dec) ~ Episode 7

9 Dec. 1st evening in Aswan...we went up to the deck to experience the night weather in Aswan. Not as bad as Cairo. There was a Nubian Folkloric show prepared for the guests of the cruise. A group of us went out to explore the neighbourhood and experience Aswan night life. Quite nice. Busy. Everywhere you go, it's still quite rowdy and lively. I know this comes out of nowhere, but I just feel like penning this down. I'm writing this blog while referring to my photos which I've already arranged in chronological order. And the next 4 photos are photos of my mosquito bites. YES. Mosquito bites in Egypt during winter. I got bitten on the first day at Le Meridien. I must say I'm both surprised and NOT surprised about my bites. Surprised because it's winter! Most likely carried into hotel by guests. Not surprised because even in Singapore, I'm extremely attractive to mosquitoes. They're a big fan of mine. =D

The next morning (10 Dec), we got out of the cruise and boarded the feluccas (small sail boats) next to our cruise. We needed 2 feluccas as there were 42 of us and one felucca can only take around 20 passengers. The sail on the nile is a really wonderful experience. With the cool breeze, morning sun, cool temperature, and the fact that I'm sailing on the world's longest river! Well, not forgetting that it's a crocodile infested river. The famous nile crocodiles. It was such a lovely sail down (or up?) the river to nearby smaller islands. We sailed past the Kitchener's Island. We also had a close shot of the Tomb of the Nobles on the West Bank. It's just lovely. Enjoying the sights and breeze. The whole journey took about 1.5 hours.

Journey to Egypt (6-15 Dec) ~ Episode 6

9 Dec. Got up to a great and pleasant morning! Had an extremely good sleep considering that Sandra and I slept from 10 till about 8. What's more, the motion of the train moving really made it more comfortable. What we dubbed as "Egyptian Osim massage". HAHA! It was a really good ride. Good experience. The dock and cruise were just around the corner. Less than 5 mins drive away. The cruise rooms weren't ready when we arrived, thus gotta deposit our luggage 1st and head straight to the first stop of the day. It's much more calm...neat...organised...in Aswan compared to Cairo. It's really beautiful to look across the Nile and have the West Bank as the backdrop. Quite romantic. First stop, the Old & High Dams. It means a lot to me to be able to stand on the dams. Heard, read and studied about this dam in secondary geography. Yea! I've finally stood on it! =P (*clears throat* enough bragging)

After that, we reached a small port and boarded a boat to visit the temple of Philae, the first temple of the trip. It's absolutely beautiful and powerful (and it's the same wherever we went)! Next, to the Abu Simbel Perfume Palace. Well, it's not a real palace. It's a place where they sell scent and essence. Got a set of 4 bottles. Five Secrets (Chanel #5), Lotus, Musk and Lavendar. Got back to the cruise at around 3pm. Straight to a sumptuous lunch and then....SHOWER! Haha...there wasn't any showering facilities on the train. It was about 4.30pm by the time I finished showering. Just in time for beautiful sunset! Don't be jealous when you see the beautiful sunset! =P

Journey to Egypt (6-15 Dec) ~ Episode 5

8 Dec. After that enriching lesson at the Egyptian Antiquities Museum, we went for a late lunch at a local restaurant. Food's good. Pretty satisfied! Ok...now stomachs filled, next, gotta satisfy our retail craving! We made our way to Khan El-Khalili Bazaar. On our way there, we saw many interesting sights, such as The Saladin Citadel of Cairo and the City of the Dead. The Citadel was built by Saladin and was home to Egypt's rulers for 700 years. It really looked magnificent and grand! The City of the Dead has an interesting background. Well, as the name suggests, it's a cemetery. It is a bustling grid of tombs and mausoleums where people live and work amongst their dead and ancestors. Many residents live here to be near their loved ones, or because they were forced from more crowded areas in Cairo and immigration from countryside. I must say they're really brave!

We got to Khan El-Khalili Bazaar around early evening and the first thing that captured my attention was the beautifully lit mosque. The front row of shop houses look kinda like holland village. They're restaurants. And here we go....starting one of our first series of retail therapy. Along the way, we saw many interesting things. Spices, antiquities, you name it. The cutest thing is that as we walked down, the locals greeted "Ni hao" (how are you in Mandarin). They assume we're from China. The way they pronounced sound like "Meow...". No offence but it's kinda funny. Shop shop shop. Buy buy buy. Soon it was time to leave. We had to be on punctual for the departure because for security reasons, the bus wasn't allowed to wait at the pick up point.

Next stop....Ramesses Train Station! We were quite excited about our 1st class sleeper train. It was an eye-opening experience for me. After all the excitement and photographing, we finally settled down for dinner and off to bed! Cya in Aswan!

Journey to Egypt (6-15 Dec) ~ Episode 4

8 Dec. I had a very good sleep. Guess it was a long and tiring day 1 right after we touched down. Had a nice breakfast at the hotel too. The food was quite good. We checked out of hotel right after breakfast. Hoped on the bus and headed to downtown Cairo city for a visit to the famous Egyptian Antiquities Museum, containing the world's largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities and treasures of King Tutankhamun. A pity that cameras aren't allowed in there. (U need to pay extra $ if u wanna do so) Thus we had to leave them on the bus. We spent quite some time in there, but I feel even 1 day isn't enough to cover the entire museum. It's a beautiful museum. Collection after collection of extensive ancient Egyptian antiquities, mummies of Pharoahs lined up one after another. Without our excellent Egyptologist, Hussein, it would have been extremely difficult to apprehend what each exhibit symbolises. As we listened intently to Hussein's explanation, it got more overwhelming. From tiny tools, mummified animals, chairs, coffins, weapons and chariots once used by powerful Pharaohs, underwear worn by a King (can't remember which) and of course, the highlight of the visit, sarcophagus, golden mask and the treasures of King Tutankhamun. All I did was...."wow..", "wow...", "wow...." and more "wow...". =D

Journey to Egypt (6-15 Dec) ~ Episode 3

7 Dec. It took us less than 5 mins to reach the pyramids by bus. We watched the pyramids get closer and bigger as the bus approached the drop-off point. Awesome...we decided to pay US$30 more to take the camel ride on the Giza Plateau, behind the Greaty Pyramids. No words could describe our feelings. Looking up at the majestic structures, you couldn't help but start wondering how it was built. I paid addition US$30 to enter the second pyramid, Pyramid of Chephren. It was a fantastic experience to enter the pyramid. BUT, it wasn't an easy one. The passage down was small, narrow and long. My thighs were aching for 2 days after that. Haha! No matter what, this memorable experience will stay with me for life. Not forgetting my first camel ride! It was soooooo fun! After that, we came down to the last structure - The Sphinx. Like what the guide book stated, it's really smaller than imagined!

After a sumptuous lunch at a local restaurant, we visited the papyrus museum. Then, we headed back to hotel to rest for about 30 mins before meeting again to go to the Sound & Light Show at the Sphinx. I must say this, (and I believe I speak for everyone) it was freezing! Because of the geographical location, it's slightly colder than southern cities. We had to endure the cold wind. Haha! The show lasted for about 45 mins. Honestly speaking, the lighted pyramids and sphinx looked magnificent and majestic and beautiful silhouette against the dark distant light from the desert. However, it was hard to enjoy with the freezing temperature and cold wind blowing at our faces. Haha! Finally, after a late dinner at a local restaurant next to our hotel, we headed back to Le Meridien after our first long day. =D

Journey to Egypt (6-15 Dec) ~ Episode 2

7 Dec. Ooohhh...chilly. That was the feeling I had the minute we stepped out the the departure hall of Cairo International Airport. It's kinda nice weather. The first thing that I noticed on our way to Le Meridien was all the various sizes of satelite dishes on the roofs of all the houses. A bit tired from the long hours of flight but extremely excited to take in all the amazing sights. At that point, I felt overwhelmed. Many thoughts running through my mind..."I'm on the continent of Africa....I've arrived in Egypt, I'm walking on it's ground/soil....I'm breathing it's air..." Looking at the houses, I thought how fortunate Singaporeans are.

Soon, we could see the...Great Pyramids from the highway! The picture on the left...our first sight of the majestic structures! Everyone on the bus got super excited. More snaps. And guess what? Don't be jealous...our hotel was situated right opposite the pyramids. The road leading to the pyramids was just about 25m away from our hotel entrance. NICE.....what's even better was that my room has a beautiful view of the pyramid. =D

Rested for 90 mins before setting out to visit the Great Pyramids.

Journey to Egypt (6-15 Dec) ~ Episode 1

6 Dec. Arrived at Changi Airport T2 at approximately 7.45pm. Pretty excited. The last time I travelled overseas was in Nov 2007, to Phuket. This is gonna be my first long-distance travel. Ok...fast forward with all the good old greetings with travel mates, check-in of luggage (my luggage weighed 15kg), goodbyes and hugs.

..Boarded the almighty SIA plane that was sitting beautifully on the tarmac. Greeted by the ever friendly and beautiful/handsome stewards and stewardesses. Plane took off on the dot, enjoyed a light refreshment about an hour after take-off. I was actually watching G.I. Joe but was bored and sleepy after 30 mins. What a disappointing movie. Several severe turbulence over the bay of bengal. It was so strong at one point that our drinks got spilled all over. One of the Singapore Girls serving beside me had to kneel down. Yea...it was that severe. Had a good sleep, and soon we reached Dubai International Airport transit. It was a relatively short transit and had to remain onboard for the security personnel to check our boarding passes and luggage. After another 3 hour and 45 mins, we finally touched down at Cairo International Airport at 6.10am Egypt time. =D

Post exam @ Seletar Air Base

Brought the Sec 2s to Seletar Air Base for their PEA. What an amazing activity! Planned by Ms James and Mrs You. Based on the book "To Kill A Mockingbird", the activity made use of the layout of the entire residential area at the base, to allow students to go around the stations using maps and clues.

I teamed up with Victoria, a fellow 'HUMANS'. (hehheh...history teacher). Had a great time chatting and getting to know more about each other. Tiring and hot. A bit sun-burnt. Returned to school with a red nose.

Had a little incident at our station. Apparently a student pointed to our state flag hanging on the fence of one of the houses and used vulgarities. The owner was furious and confronted the students. He claimed the student denied. Marched up to Vicky and I, half-naked (bare top). He was in his boxers! I mean...what on earth was he thinking about?! He claimed he's offended by what the student had done, but he didn't even seem think how we'd feel with him charging at us in his boxers! Upon our return to school, Victoria and I spoke to Mr Yeo, informed him that he might be expecting a call from a resident anytime.

The 1st night of the ArtsFest has ended. Super tired. Well, I admit, it's a bit fun. Beside reading from scripts, gotta improvise on the spot. Like a live talk show. Haha! Okie okie...too tired to continue. It's been a super long day!

Post exam week

Accompanied the Sec 1 students to the European Heritage Centre along Ceylon road. I'm glad I was given this opportunity to go (take over a colleague due to a clash in events). So many fascinating facts and stories. Learned so much about the Eurasian community in Singapoore.

Made a trip to Republic Poly with Charmain and VP Mr Tan. Had to finalise the order of the events. Charmaine and I left as soon as we had all the information we needed to prepare the scripts.

Ciao!

Super tiring...

It's the last week of term 2. It's post-exam week. All kinds of fun activities have been planned for the kids. Helped out with the Maths trail on today. Quite fun and interesting! But I don't think the kids really appreciate it. =\ Also had a good chat with Janet. She's such a nice person! Although she sits beside me, we're separated by a huge pillar. Never really have the chance to chat with her. I'm glad we did today! =D

Anyway, Charmaine told me that she has an emcee thingy to prepare for the ArtsFest on Thursday and Friday. I've kindly offered to help her. (Otherwise she'll be doing this all by herself =\)

Long time no see...or hear?

Haha...I know I know...it's been donkey years since I post on my blog. I don't really like to blog about school. There's nothing much to say. Lol!

The past few months have been very exciting, fun and busy for me. And guess where I'm writing this blog? School! Huh! I have super light time table on Fridays. Only 1 hour English with 4A1. But since they took the exam las Friday, there's no need to go in for lesson. So it's up for grab for other subject teachers. Very weekend mood on Fridays (who doesn't eh?) Especially this couple of weeks. We get to dress down now. So it feels different. Sigh. Should have implemented the dress down option long ago.

As I've said, I'm super free today. No lesson at all. Right now I'm just waiting for school to end and I'm probably gonna head somewhere to window shop and chill. But I'm kinda lazy to go town.

Can't wait to get home to my beloved kitties...
